Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the data come from?
US Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI-U series (Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers), annual averages. Bundled in the calculator JS, no API calls needed.
Why annual averages instead of monthly?
For most use cases (comparing values across years), annual averages are more interpretable than picking a specific month. For month-to-month research, the BLS publishes monthly CPI data.
What about inflation in other countries?
This is US-only. UK Office for National Statistics, Eurostat, Statistics Canada all publish equivalent CPI series. A multi-country version is on the v2 roadmap.
